3 Tips for Finding Flow in Personal Leadership

by Anne Preston on February 23, 2010

Flow, as defined by Csikszentmihalyi, is a state of enjoyment, as usually found in play

Make Work as Play

How you both think and engage with your work has a lot to do with your experience of working.   Your attitude and behaviours have a lot to do with how much you will enjoy what it is you do.  You might be surprised to find out that you can actually be at choice with how you feel in any given moment and also  how much enjoyment you can take from your work.

When you take a leadership role in choosing to have a great experience; you can dramatically change your experience of work to the point where it can feel like play. The subtle shift to make  – is to be less in love with what you do but rather how you do it.  It’s in the the mastery of activities that will bring you the greater capacity to see things as play.

The spirit of play and the energy of play can be brought in to any work situation.  Some types of play will suit different situations but the over all idea  is whether it is inviting some others to play with you or perhaps  setting a productivity challenge for yourself : the more you work in the spirit of play; the more likely you are get into the flow zone.  Its not about being childish or silly.  It’s about bringing in  energies of  curiosity, willingness, love and enjoyment and applying it to your work.

Pursue Mastery

The key to flow with skills – is to have the level of your skill in line with the challenge of those skills.    When your skills are matched to the challenge of  the task or job – the likelihood of you experiencing flow increases.   When your level of mastery is greater than the task or the job , the task can be not very exciting to do.   When your skill level is far, far below the challenge – things can seem overwhelming – and you might even fear the task.   So, the key to being in the flow zone is to find that place where there is a resonance and just right balance between the challenge and your skills.

It is possible to be in the flow zone.  As you increase your skills – also increase your level of challenge.

Make it enjoyable

The keys to making personal leadership enjoyable are things like being aligned with your own values – and then referencing everything you do to your own values.   When you are honouring your values – there is a level of fulfillment that comes from doing that.   Taking things a bit further,   when you align your motivation and inspiration to your chosen meaningful  values – joy happens.
