Regret can be an unnecessary emotion.   Managing your emotions is one skill set needed in Personal Leadership.   Being a personal leader who is regret-free doesn’t mean doing nothing.  Being without regret is about managing your thought process, your emotional state and being aware.    Regret is the pain experienced in mind and body of something judged wrong or not good enough, especially when we judge that our action caused a loss of joy in some way. Here are some ideas on how to dramatically reduce the amount of regret you may experience in your lifetime:

  1. Be Impulse Free. Riding the emotional wave of those flash-in-the-pan ideas, purchases, opportunities that require decisions until your body knows it is a right decision vs. your mind just thinking it is.    There is a big difference between knowing and thinking.   When you know something, you know it and you know how you know it.  Making decisions from “knowing” can save many, many regrets
  2. Start Fresh. You have the choice and the opportunity to let go of what has already passed by.   Forgive, release, appreciate whatever has gotten you to this point and then start fresh today.  You can give yourself permission to live a regret-free life.   If you feel you need extra assistance in releasing the past there are many practitioners that do work in letting go of old emotions.
  3. Have Judgment Free Awareness. Start seeing things for what they are. What they look like, sound like, taste like, feel like – and let go of needing to compare it to anything else.  When we judge, we take ourselves out of the present moment; that is something in itself that can cause us to experience regret.
  4. See the Perfection of What Is (and of what was).  Everything that you have experienced in your life has contributed to the gift of who you are in the world.   Everyone you have met has prepared you to meet someone new.  Everything you have experienced gave you a knowledge, wisdom, and knowing.   Seeing the perfection of the present moment – will allow you to stay present with what is going on around you.  Seeing the perfection of the past will allow you to learn from your experiences so you can experience an even better present.
  5. Remind Yourself to See the Future Before it Becomes Your Past. A tip to help you avoid regret in your life – is to remember in advance your past.  Before doing an action – think about how you will feel about it in 1 years time, 5 years time, 20 years time.   In the same way – ask yourself – If I don’t do this action will I regret it in the future at some point.
  6. Do Your Very Best, Always. Doing your best means doing things with heart and always looking for ways to improve.  Apathy is a friend to regret.  Keep regret away by being committed to doing things to the very best of your ability.   You are a brilliant being – with all the potential in the world to give your very best.   No excuses, just do it.
  7. Do Things You Are Passionate About – Everyday.  The antonym of regret is satisfaction.  Doing things that you are passionate about – leads to fulfillment and complete satisfaction.  We often forget to orientate our days around what brings us joy.  When you remember to honour your passions – this will help you to regret proof your life.
